Thinking about quitting can be overwhelming. You must do it for yourself, but you don’t have to do it alone. The Kinney Drugs Ready. Set. Quit. Program was created to help you quit. Our pharmacists will offer you a personalized smoking cessation assessment and provide you with the tools you need to succeed.

  • Information on over-the-counter smoking aids.
  • Ready. Set. Quit. Workbook that is packed with practical tools, advice and exercises to help you create your personalized quit plan and guide you through the quit process.

When you stop smoking, your body begins to repair itself immediately.

  • 20 minutes after quitting: Your blood pressure drops.
    • 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting: Your heart attack risk begins to drop and your lung function begins to improve.
      • 1 to 9 months after quitting: Your coughing and shortness of breath decreases.
        • 1 year after quitting: Your risk of coronary heart disease is half that of someone who is still smoking.
          • 5 to 15 years after quitting: Your risk of stroke is now equal to a non-smoker’s.
            • 10 years after quitting: Your lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker’s.

We know how hard it can be to quit smoking. Nicotine is a very addictive drug. Fortunately, there are many ways to overcome cigarette addiction.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved seven medications to help you quit smoking. Each has their own unique benefits and which medication you choose is a personal choice. Your Kinney pharmacist can review each option with you, help you get a prescription from your doctor if it is needed and work with your insurance company to see if smoking cessation medications are covered.

Tackling the psychological addiction

There are many thoughts and behaviors that are associated with tobacco use. This area of tobacco addiction can be conquered with preparation, much needed support, focus and determination.

Seek counseling

You can improve your chances of quitting for good with professional help. Counseling can provide you with practical skills to overcome nicotine addiction, as well as support and encouragement. This type of counseling can be offered in a variety of ways – online, by phone or in person. At Kinney Drugs, we help people enroll in their State quitline and provide ongoing support throughout the quit process.

S - Set a quit date.

T - Tell your family, friends and coworkers that you plan to quit.

A - Anticipate and plan for challenges and be prepared for relapse.

R - Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car and work.

T - Talk to your pharmacist or healthcare provider about medications to help you quit.

Reward yourself

Quitting has its own rewards, but these rewards don’t come quickly enough to help when you first quit smoking, so it’s important to set up a system of immediate rewards. Your rewards should be things you enjoy, and they should be easy to obtain. Plan a small reward for each day you remain tobacco-free, a larger reward at the end of each non-smoking week and a special reward for every month of success.

Help Someone Special Quit Smoking

If you are worried about a person in your life who smokes, this information is for you! The kind of support you give can either help or hold back his or her willingness and ability to quit. Being there for someone is great – knowing what to do and what to avoid can make you an effective helper!

 

Understand the addiction

Nicotine is the addictive drug within tobacco products. Passing even a few hours without nicotine can be painfully difficult and can make it very hard for someone to cope with routine situations and to behave normally.

Quitting tobacco takes more than breaking the physical addiction. It also requires making lifestyle changes and altering daily routines. Encourage the person in your life to create a plan for how to live without tobacco by finding out what makes them want to smoke and planning ahead for those situations.

 

Understand how you can help

What you do to help a friend to quit should be tailored to what he or she needs. You must remember to be sensitive, understanding and forgiving, because your role is to support your friend, not to force them to quit. Quitting tobacco may be the most difficult thing that person ever goes through.

Do:

  • Ask what would be most helpful for you to do.
  • Listen to your friend: respect what they are saying and feeling.
  • Encourage them to exercise as a tool of quitting, and offer to join them in exercising.
  • Tell them that you know they are strong enough to quit.
  • Be sympathetic to the physical and emotional symptoms of withdrawal.
  • Encourage them to talk about slips and relapses, and tell them that they haven’t failed, but are going through a normal part of quitting.
  • Remind them of the reasons that they want to quit.

Don’t:

  • Lecture or preach about the harmful effects of smoking.
  • Give ultimatums, “If you don’t quit this time, we’re through.”
  • Make them feel guilty or blame them for their inability to quit.
  • Smoke around your friend.
  • Offer cigarettes to anyone trying to quit.
