Healthy Coping with Diabetes

Living with diabetes can be stressful. Having a good support system to help deal with issues or emotions that might arise is very important. The key to building a support system is to have open communication with family, friends and your healthcare team. This can help you solve problems regarding diabetes and lessen any negative emotions you may be having.


Seek Help When Needed

How you are feeling can impact your ability to manage your diabetes. It can be hard to not let emotions such as depression and anxiety take over. In fact, patients with diabetes are more susceptible to these type of emotions compared to someone who does not have diabetes. Talk about your feelings with your diabetes healthcare provider and other people in your support team.


Call your provider if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Feeling sad, depressed, down, or blue consistently for the last two weeks.
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in things that you used to enjoy for the last two weeks.
  • Your mood has interfered with taking care of your diabetes.


Stay Positive

Whatever emotion you are feeling is the right emotion. It is okay to feel however you are feeling. Stay positive, you can’t change previous lifestyle choices but there are many things that you can do to manage your diabetes. And know that you will not always manage perfectly and that is okay. Do your best and do not let negative emotions linger too long.
