Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical in the Cannabis sativa plant, also known as hemp or marijuana. More than 80 chemicals, known as cannabinoids, have been identified in hemp. The most widely known of these is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which has psychoactive properties (meaning they cause a "high" feeling). Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical also obtained from hemp, but it contains only very small amounts of THC. Unlike THC, CBD has no psychoactive properties but does have other medicinal purposes. People typically use CBD products for relief from stress, anxiety, sleeplessness and/or pain -- with no "high" feeling.
The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill made it legal to sell hemp and hemp products in the U.S. But that doesn't mean that all hemp-derived cannabidiol products are legal. CBD cannot be included in products marketed with therapeutic claims and can only be included in "cosmetic" products if the product contains less than 0.3% THC.
