Cleansing your skin helps remove "the day" and provides a clean slate for the rest of your skincare, allowing it to work more effectively!

Lot's of things end up on your skin at the end of "the day".
  • environmental pollution such as cigarette smoke, smog, automobile exhaust, and manufacturing by-products
  • dirt
  • sweat
  • excess oil
  • cosmetics
Any ONE of these things can cause issues for the skin, including:
  • breakouts
  • clogged pores
  • premature aging
  • age spots
  • sensitivity
  • itching and dryness
By cleansing away "the day", you help to keep your skin IN CHECK!

The BEST cleansing routine is one you do consistently on most days.

At the very LEAST, cleanse in the evening to remove "the day".

In addition to cleansing at night, cleansing in the morning is helpful if you do any of the following:
  • use products at night designed specifically for nighttime use
    • products designed for use at night can sometimes cause sun sensitivity and should not be worn outside
    • nighttime products are often heavier and creamier than daytime products and may be too thick to wear under makeup
  • sweat during the night
  • have a different skincare routine for daytime
    • If you use makeup primers &/or products with SPFs, it's best to start with a clean slate!

Choose a cleanser based on how your skin looks and feels!

Does your skin often feel dry and tight? Does it have a flaky or rough texture?
  • Look for cleansers that have a moisturizing formula or cream-like consistency.
Does your skin usually feel comfortable throughout the day with no excessive dryness or oiliness?
  • You can use most cleansers - find one you enjoy using!
Does your skin always feel hydrated without a moisturizer, and you notice more oil on the skin throughout the day?
  • Try a cleanser aimed at deep cleansing with ingredients that help balance out oil such as tea tree and witch hazel or contain oil absorbers such as charcoal or clays.
Does your skin usually tingle, sting, itch, or appear red?
  • Choose cleansers that calm and soothe sensitive skin types and avoid astringents.

In the skincare world, a treatment, sometimes called a serum, is focused on specific skin concerns.

You can use multiple treatments to target different concerns by alternating days or applying one treatment in the morning and another in the evening!

It is VERY important to follow directions on any treatment or serum since formulas are often concentrated and can cause irritation if not used properly. With treatments, there really can be too much of a good thing!

There are many different types of treatments, and not everyone will need the same ones!  Choose the ones that address YOUR skincare concerns!

Here are some popular treatments:

  • Glycolic Acid
    • Helps slough off dead skin cells
    • Can improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin, address uneven tone and texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
    • Use this type of treatment to get a bright and even-toned complexion!
  • Retinol
    • Pure form of Vitamin A
    • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin elasticity, and evens skin tone
  • Hyaluronic Acid
    • Defined as a humectant and draws moisture from surroundings to the skin to increase hydration
    • Helps skin look and feel soft, radiant, and plump!
  • Vitamin C
    • Antioxidant that can help protect the skin from environmental damage
    • Skin-brightening
    • Fades dark spots and evens out skin tone

Our skin is happiest when it is BALANCED, and moisturizers help restore it!

Luckily, there are TONS of moisturizers available that work well for even high-maintenance skin types – YES, even oil/acne-prone skin types can benefit from a moisturizer!

  • When your skin is dry or mature, using rich, creamy moisturizers will help restore moisture levels into BALANCE.
  • If you find your skin to be oily at the end of the day and don’t use a moisturizer, your skin may be detecting dehydration and produce MORE oil to restore BALANCE.
Generally, all skin types can benefit from moisturizing!  Pay attention to how your skin feels and change things up when necessary!

Choose your moisturizer and change it up based on how your skin looks and feels!

The tricky part is how your skin looks and feels changes more frequently than you might think.

Here are some familiar, and maybe not so familiar, factors that affect your skin:
  • Change of season
  • New medications
  • Water quality
  • Age
  • Diet
  • Hormones
  • Genetics
  • Sun exposure
So, HOW do you choose?  Next time you wash your face, how does your skin feel right after you wash it - before putting on anything else?

  • If your skin feels oily at the end of the day and comfortable right after washing, look for:
    • Gel-based moisturizers
    • Words such as oil-free, lightweight, or weightless on the package
  • If your skin feels dry and tight after washing, look for:
    • Cream-based moisturizers
    • Words such as rich, creamy, or hydrating on the package
  • If your skin feels just fine after washing and stays that way all day:
    • You can experiment with different types of moisturizers!
Once you have decided on the type of moisturizer you're looking for, it’s time to experiment!  For daytime moisturizing, check out products that also contain SPF. There are even moisturizers designed specifically for nighttime, so your skin gets some EXTRA pampering while you sleep!

Generally, once you wash your face, you should follow up with a moisturizer suited for your skin.

Whenever you wash your face, whether it’s once a day, twice a day, or even “whenever I get to it,” following with a moisturizer helps protect the skin, restore balance, and retain elasticity over time.
